Customize TestNG html Report

Please visit for the updated article customized emailable report along with screenshots which works perfect for newer versions of testNG and tested with testng latest version 6.14.3

When ever we execute tests with TestNG, it will generate a default html report with basic information.

TestNG has provided an ability to implement 'IReporter' an interface which can be implemented to generate a customized report by users. It has 'generateReport()' method which will be invoked after all the suite has completed its execution and gives the report into the specified output directory.

Syntax for generateReport() method:

//XmlSuite is a class describes the tag <suite> in testng.xml
//ISuite is an interface defining a Test Suite.
generateReport(List<XmlSuite> xmlSuites, List<ISuite> suites, String outputFileDirectory)

The below is the default TestNG emailable report:

Default TestNG Report

We will try to customize below features in testng report.

1. Display Total time took for execution in 'hh:mm:ss' format which is easy to understand.

2. Display the Browser name which we passed in TestNG.xml file, based on which execution will be started, if not it will take 'Firefox' as default browser. We will look into example later below.

3. Display Start time and End time of complete suite execution

4. Display Start time and Execution time for each individual test

5. Display Exception information, which will help us to identify but just seeing the summary report rather than going to detailed section

And here is the Customized Emailable Report which we will be doing in the example:

Customized TestNG Report

Now let us look into the example:

First let us create a new class with name 'TestNGCustomReportListener' which should implement 'IReporter' under a package 'com.easy'.

    }

}

Below is the code for 'TestB.java' which has only testng test methods just for example.

package com.tests;

import org.testng.Assert;
import org.testng.annotations.Test;

/**
 * Created by VISISHTA.
 */
public class TestB {

    @Test
    public void firstTestCase() throws Exception {
        Thread.sleep(2000);
        System.out.println("im in first test case from ClassTwo Class");
    }

    @Test
    public void secondTestCase() throws Exception  {
    	 Thread.sleep(500);
        System.out.println("im in second test case from ClassTwo Class");
        Assert.fail("Failing this Test");
    }

    @Test
    public void thirdTestCase() throws Exception {
        Thread.sleep(2000);
        System.out.println("im in third test case from ClassTwo Class");
    }

    @Test
    public void fourthTestCase() throws Exception {
        Thread.sleep(2000);
        System.out.println("im in fourth test case from ClassTwo Class");
    }

    @Test
    public void fifthTestCase() throws Exception {
        Thread.sleep(2000);
        System.out.println("im in fifth test case from ClassTwo Class");
    }
}

Below is the code for 'TestC.java' which has simple test methods just for example.

package com.tests;

import org.testng.SkipException;
import org.testng.annotations.Test;

/**
 * Created by VISISHTA.
 */
public class TestC {

    @Test
    public void firstTestCase() throws Exception {
    	Thread.sleep(100);
        System.out.println("im in first test case from ClassThree Class");
    }

    @Test
    public void secondTestCase() throws Exception {
    	Thread.sleep(5000);
        System.out.println("im in second test case from ClassThree Class");
        throw new SkipException("Skipping this test with exception");
    }
}

Now, let us define and testng.xml file as below :

<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
<!DOCTYPE suite SYSTEM "http://testng.org/testng-1.0.dtd" >
<suite name="Main Test Suite" verbose="5">

<parameter name="appURL" value="https://www.google.co.in/"/>
<parameter name="browserType" value="firefox"/>

   <listeners>
         <listener class-name="com.easy.TestNGCustomReportListener" />
    </listeners>
    <test name="TestNG Test Group">
        <packages>
            <package name="com.tests" />
        </packages>
    </test>
</suite>

After adding all the classes and TestNG.xml file, the project structure looks like below

Customized TestNG Report

We are DONE now, Let us execute TestNG.xml file to see the new customized TestNG Emailable report.

Where can you find your new TestNG Report?

-> Refresh the Project folder, Navigate to 'test-output' folder , Now you should find two reports 'custom-report.html' and ''emailable-report.html' .

Here 'emailable-report.html' is default report generated by TestNG and 'custom-report.html' is customized report that we have generated.

Hope this article helps you in generating the Customized TestNG Report.

plz send the code,, I am new to it...

Excellent

I am working on cross browser testing and each of test methods in multiple classes run on 4 browsers Chrome, Firefox, IE, Safari.

The testng HTML reports & extent reports generated have the test methods in a column but I also need the browser name against each test method.

Do you have a solution or can you help. I am on a very strict deadline. Even if the testng HTML reports would have the browser name against the test method would be great.

http://www.seleniumeasy.com/testng-tutorials/testng-customize-emailable-...

I found this link but I just need the browser column next to method column to custom report in the link

I want the change location of file 'custom-report.html'.
Is it possible? Please help.

Thanks
