Before we get started, make sure you have downloaded Katalon Studio already at www.katalon.com

Automate your Windows app testing with Record feature

Let’s Start your Windows Testing with Record Feature

Step 1: To start your Windows Recording, select the Record Windows Action icon from the main toolbar of Katalon Studio as shown below:

Step 1

Step 2: When the Windows Recorder dialog box is presented, fill in the required information at the CONFIGURATIONS section.

  • Configuration: you can view and edit the WinAppDriver URL and Desired Capabilities
  • Application File: the absolute path to the Windows Executable File (*.exe). You also can use the button Browse… to quickly locate your testing application file.

Step 2

After you’ve done the setting in the Application File, click the Start button.

Step 3: The stated Windows application is then deployed and opened on a testing machine.

Step 4: The current screenshot of your application is displayed in the Screen View dialog box on the testing machine.

In the Screen Objects section, all the windows objects of that screenshot are analyzed and organized under a tree model.

Choose any object in that tree, and it will be presented in the Screen View box accordingly.

Step 4

Step 5: At the Possible Actions section, select an element and then specify the action to execute.

Step 5

Step 6: All the specified actions above are recorded in the Recorded Actions section.

Step 6

All elements are captured and displayed in the Captured Objects during the recording session. If you want to change the locator of a captured object, simply modify it in the Locator tab of Object Properties. Then click Highlight to verify if the new locator identifies the intended object correctly.

Step 7: You can stop the current application or start another application if needed. Click the Refresh Screen button if you want to reload the Screen View and Screen Objects. After you’ve done your recording, click OK to save all recorded actions in Katalon Studio.

Step 8: You will be encouraged to save the captured objects in the Object Repository of Katalon Studio. You can select an existing folder in the repository or create a new one, then click OK to continue.

Step 8

Step 9: After finishing your recording session, export all the recorded steps to a new test case. Then fill in the Test Case Name text box and click OK.

Step 9

Step 10: All of your recorded objects and actions are already deployed in the test case as seen below:

Step 10

Step 11: From the main toolbar, find the Run button and select the Windows icon to execute the test script.

Step 11

Step 12: The Windows test will take place automatically with those recorded steps accordingly.

Notes:

    1. One action at a time. You have to finish the action that is being performed on a test object before executing the other actions.
    2. Make sure that your Windows screen is always unlocked throughout the test spy, record, or execution.
  1. It’s not recommended to run multiple applications simultaneously, test your applications one by one.

Congratulations! Now you have acquired all steps needed to create your first Windows testing with Record feature of Katalon Studio. For more tutorials and guidelines, please visit www.katalon.com
